A Cleaner, Happier Me!

Today is day 14 on the cleanse I started on May 4th.  I've had a few slips along the way, but have learned valuable things about myself when those have happened.

Slip Number One - Timbits don't taste as great as you remember.  Eat one after two days of nothing processed in you system and you learn that they are little balls of sugar laden cement in your mount.

Slip Number Two - Cream Cheese and Sour Cream dip with tomatoes, green peppers, salsa and cheese and scoops torillas...a dairy nightmare to my digestive system.   This one was a week into the cleanse, and proved that I'm going to have to be very very careful with my dairy products.

Slip Number Three - bread and becel and chocolate chip cookies.  A previous go-to when craving.  Currently offers up digestive cramps and migraines.

Slip Number Four - Free-range chicken with sour cream and cream of mushroom sauce, bacon wrapped fingerling potatoes and breadcrumb coated cauliflower...yep tastes as good as it sounds!  Scrumptious in fact!  The only trouble was that dang dairy problem.  Rapid digested the meal and the body gave it back to nature the same night I ate it.

What have I learned from this cleanse?

First, I've proved that my "sugar" cravings are actually protein cravings.  Second, I've got a large sensitivity to dairy.  Third, there's a preservative in Bread that contributes to my migraines.  Fourth, just because you remember it tasting good, doesn't mean it actually did.  Perhaps this one was the most intriguing for me - since Timbits are readily available and often something I'd settle on when I couldn't decide what I wanted.   I guess I remember what my brain associated with something tasty.  Those things are so small they really don't stay in the mouth long enough for the taste buds to get a good read anyways.

The bonus of this whole cleans is that I'm very quickly approaching 9 pounds lost.  I'll be continuing the cleanse menu for the rest of the month.  I will no think long and hard about deviating from the accepted foods as we've already learned how bad it feels to cheat!

Second bonus - I don't have wild cravings anymore.  I don't have massive mood swings anymore, and PMS is not something I have any longer!

Third Bonus - no bloated, I-ate-too-much feeling after meals.  No bloated days noticed except after cheats.  I feel better.  I feel good.  I feel lighter and more agile.

Cleanse is definitely recommended to anyone wanting to jump start or continue any weight loss regime they are currently doing.  If you want to know what it was that I did, send me a message or email me at velvet_30@hotmail.com

For those who are chocolate junkies, coffee drinkers, or enjoy an imbibing drink in the evenings, this will be difficult.  I curbed my chocolate issues with it, I'm not a coffee drinker, or a tea drinker, and I don't imbib but once every other month or so, so those were easy to deal with.  The hardest thing I found was completely removing all processed condiments - unless you make it yourself it's all off limits for the cleanse.

You will get through though.  They said to expect turbulence between days 3 and 5 - I didn't find anything huge on these days, but you might if you are trying to go without coffee.  Like I said, never started, don't like the taste so I didn't have many of the issues others reported.  If you are going to try, start cutting down on those things now, so when you go live with the program the transition isn't that hard on your body.  And warn everyone you are doing it, so they know before hand if you are short with them.

Great thing for me so far!  Can't wait to see what happens at acupuncture on Thursday!

Cleanse Day 4

A little update on the cleanse I'm doing.  First thre days went well I think.  Had a slip on Tuesday evening - I ate a timbit.  Funny thing about sugary confections...when you've made up your mind to go without a bunch of things and then you go ahead and try one of those things, it doesn't taste good.  At all.  A timbit on Day 2 of cleanse actually looked better than it tasted.

Some of you are saying - well duh!  it's a TIMBIT!  Yep.  That's rihgt.  I get it now.  Lesson learned.  And for the record my brain was seriously disappointed by the return from my tongue and taste buds that it wasn't enjoying something.

Today is Day 4.  I went to regular kickbox class last night.  Did my hour work out.  Felt pretty good when it was done.  got a weird buzzy feeling about an hour after the workout was over and a whole bunch of mixed signals from my body - hungry, tired, physically exhausted, muscles feeling over worked etc.  I showered and went to bed.  This morning when I woke up, I didn't want to wake up.

I am really tired today.  I mean like close to calling in sick so I could sleep kind of tired.  I'm at work now, so I've not given into the fatigue of my body and mind.  Though, truthfully I don't know why.  I'm yawning up a storm and feeling grumpy about being at work.  I guess this was what everyone was talking about.  Grumpy from allowing my body to detox off the stuff I was giving it that isn't necessarily good for it.  This website is were I got the cleanse from. You have to sign up to be sent the material for the cleanse.  A short version is that I am not eating any wheat or gluten products, no red meat or pork, no oranges, eggs or dairy of any kind, oils are limited to olive and canola, and condiments or processed foods are out.

Sounds like no fun right?  Well, for those who want to adjust their weight but aren't sure how they can do so in a quick and seemingly painless amount of time, start by removing all the excess processed foods - cookies, chips, crackers, pop (soda for those in countries other than Canada), if you are a coffee drinker have only one in the morning, chocolate and all condiments like ketchup bbq sauce, most mustards, relishes, mayonnaise, miracle whip.  These things are filled with sugar, huge amounts of salt and dependents you've gotten your body used to over time.  By not eating one cookie every day (usually about 100 calories) you've saved yourself ten pounds of weight gain by the end of the year.

How?  Well let's see - one cookie is 100 calories.  You eat one everyday.  That 365 days.  365 x 100 = 36,500 calories in one year, or about 10.4 pounds of extra weight.  So if you were like me and were gaining about 10 pounds per year, this is probably a contributing factor to that weight gain.  Add to that a McDonald's lunch every other day, perhaps a breakfast or two, Wendy's, Taco Bell, fillin your choice fast food restaurant.  Basically you aren't giving your body anything it needs or wants and are effectively putting pounds on.

Today - try cutting out one thing and keep it up for the rest of the week.

A Complete Overhaul!

Today is Monday May 3, 2010.  I realized this weekend while I was completing a re-write of a paper for the class I just finished, that I've let myself go.  100%, completely and totally go.

Finances - messy
Health - messy
Physical Appearance of the Apartment = a war-torn country is neater than my place!

Basically since the end of March when I got ill I haven't done much of anything, except school and workout.

I've decided that while I'm doing a complete internal body cleanse - removal of all dairy, eggs, and wheat - I'll also be doing a complete apartment cleanse.  My goal for May is to go through everything in the apartment and remove all the clutter, unnecessary items and waste.  I am looking for a women's shelter to donate some personal hygiene products to, and I will be taking a closer look at my closet as well.  I'm sure there are items in there I do not need/wear anymore.

On top of everything else, I also have to sit down and revisit my budget.  I've realized that I've been a bit stressed out about life lately, so I think now that the sun is up later in the evening, and I am feeling much more energized, it is time to clean the slate.

Incidently, the cleanse I'm doing is though vibrant living, hosted by two naturopathic doctors in a clinic in town that I visit.  I know that my body will be screaming for some of the foods I'll be cutting out, but overall this program or 14 days should be an interesting ride.  I visit an accupuncturist already, and have noticed t hat many of the points that are sore, and many of my ailments and complaints are relieved when she aids my internal organs by using detox points.  I'm a big sugar person, so for the last 4 months I've been trying to reducing my processed sugar intake.  This cleanse will effectively remove it all from my diet.  I am interested to see how the appointment later in the month goes, knowing that I'll be giving my body a chance to purge the waste as well.

I learned that your liver picks up the functions of many of the other organs in the body when they are performing at peak levels.  I've learned that mine is unhappy.  Just to point out something here, I am not visiting a Chinese accupuncturist.  There is no pain involved in my treatments and I spend most of it in a state of near sleep.  Didn't know there was more than one type of accupuncture?  Me either until I started trying them out.  I visit a Japanese practitioner.  It is their feeling that pain stresses the body, so their methods help the body relax and aid you in truly listening to yourself.  She uses the same points, but often finds that there are more than one point involved in the discomfort.  The needles are still used, but there is also a therapeutic cream used that is lit to add in stimulation and driving the point home for the body.  The heat doesn't typically hurt, though some points to end up blistering afterwards.  Those are ones that we know are truly in need of help.  There have been times when I've bruised at a few points as well - and those were interesting to note.

All in all the accupuncture has really been helping my body repair itself, show me what it truly needs and get the rest it is requiring.  After a session I always feel deeply tired and end up going to bed quite early on those nights.

So May = Cleanse Month!

What are your May goals?
